Dress ASOS / Bag* Brit-Stitch / Necklace* Nikki Lissoni
Pastels for Spring?…. Groundbreaking. That’s what Miranda Priestly would say to me if I pitched a pastel trend story to her! Regardless, this dress from asos ticks all the right boxes for me; Oversized fit which means it’s baggy and very comfortable! It’s gingham which is this season’s tartan! And pastels… with the colour scheme of my blog, it is no surprise that I’m a fan of pastel coloured things. Not so much a lover of pastel clothing but I decided to give it a go. Purple is one of my favourite colours, after all!
Smock dresses are not the most flattering of silhouettes, I know. For something that resembles maternity wear, it can be difficult to pull of this style due to it’s oversized bagginess, but there’s definitely lots of ways to wear a smock dress to make it work for you, and to get more out of this trend. It’s more versatile than it appears. Firstly, I buy these types of dresses in one size smaller than usual (or sometimes two sizes down if possible) and I got this particular one from the petite section, because they’re cut quite large anyway and I find it far too big when I opt for my usual dress size. Also, make sure you’re comfortable with the length. Most of them are above the knee but some tend to be really short (hello, bum cheeks!). Mini-dress length ones can worn with tights or the fact that it’s oversized gives it that even-balance, I think I can just about get away with it bare legged during hot days! If it’s too much like a tent, I’ll just wear a belt with it for an instant skater dress, let the belt cinch the waist in and lets the rest of the dress do it’s thang!
I think this smock dresses suits taller girls so effortlessly, but if you’re a shorty like me, with sadly, no “womanly curves” 🙁 , you’ll probably feel like anything baggy can make you feel like a kid dressing up in your mum’s clothes! In spite of this, I have about 4 or 5 smock dresses at the moment and they are one of my favourite styles (and the rest of the fashion blogging world) of dresses to wear due to it’s comfort. One thing I can’t stand is being in tight fitted clothes all day long! I really don’t like the feel of it after two hours or so, even a tight waistband on my jeans/shorts/tights make me feel annoyed and irritated!
Do you like smock dresses or is this a trend you stay well away from?

  1. You look gorgeous! Going to have to get this dress in black and white (purple is sadly not my colour)! I worry about the sizing though! These kinds of dresses were never meant to be flattering, they're definitely a Sunday Brunch kind of thing

  2. I love a good smock and actually just ordered two more last week from BooHoo. I dunno about them not suiting shorter girls, I wouldn't say they're that flattering on me because not much is atm, but they hide the belly and are quite effortlessly chic. On you however I think this looks gorgeous! You're the queen of pastels Sarah!

  3. Oooh, I'm too scared to do the smock dress look, I think I'd look fairly frumpy! And my mother always says that with an hourglass figure, if you're not trying to accentuate it, well that's just a waste of good genes, haha. I like the dress you're wearing though, it's not every day you see lavender gingham.

  4. I love everything about this outfit – the colours and print are so lovely and that dress just looks so great on you! I personally tend to stay away from smock dresses but now I'm thinking that maybe I should give them another go! 🙂

  5. I love smock dresses but I always buy a size smaller than my usual dress size, it means I still get the smock-y effect but it doesn't swamp me 🙂

You look lovely in this one Sarah, it definitely fits in with your blog colour scheme too!

  6. You are seriously one of the most adorable people! You always look so cute and chic in whatever you wear. I actually love smock dresses to me they have a bit more of a chill vibe to them so I get a very feminine but laid back vibe from your outfit. I love the gingham print on this dress! Your accessories are perfect for this outfit, I love the necklace and that purse is perfect.

You wear this smock dress very well. For me, I'm not too sure if I would wear one only because even though I'm in the process of losing weight, I'm still on the bigger side and I'm worried it would just make me look even bigger.

But anyways, a very cute outfit! I really love it. 🙂

  7. This is such a pretty outfit, you look so cute. I like the idea of smock dresses but I'm a bit too scared to wear them – I really don't think they flatter me at all.

  8. This dress really has everything! I like the pastel color, very cute! Oversize is always good (eat all you want! well, maybe not haha) and the gingham looks very romantic here too. I am so used to see dark colored ginghams from F/W that I totally forgot how pretty this print is with light colors. xD

  9. Love the opening quote – The Devil Wears Prada is one of my favourite films!

I think the dress looks lovely on you and not unflattering at all. I think wearing a long necklace like that helps to break it up a little too and sort of weigh it down so it looks a little less baggy if that makes sense?

Anyway, just catching up on your posts and I've already spotted several things I want to buy – dangerous!
